Like any large metropolitan city, Toronto has many neighborhoods each with its own unique charm. Whether you are an east sider or west ender, Torontonians love to boast about their neighborhood. For us, Mimico is the place we are proud to call home. Located in south west Toronto, we love being close to the lake (Lake Ontario, that is). Looking east from the shoreline, the view of the downtown skyline never gets old. The extensive bike trail along the waterfront allows for a scenic ride to the downtown core. Being environmentally conscious, biking is our favorite way to get around. On bad weather days, the ever convenient Mimico GO train station allows us to hop onboard with our bikes and continue our journey from there.
There are many things we love about Mimico, but here are our top five in no particular order.
Humber Bay Arch Bridge
The Humber Bay Arch Bridge is one of our favorite places to view the skyline of Toronto. Most come by walking or biking. But it is even possible to get here by kayaking or standup paddle boarding. The view is just as remarkable on the water. The bridge itself is also quite iconic with endless number of people taking photos at all hours of the day. In fact, we were one of those couples that took our wedding pictures here! Without a doubt, it will always be one of our most memorable sites in Mimico.
SanRemo Bakery
This Italian bakery has been open since 1969 and remains a popular spot for those with sweet tooth cravings. With an assortment of freshly baked breads and pastries as well as gelato, groceries, an Italian hot table and an espresso bar, it is a go-to spot for both breakfast and lunch. After a bike ride, we like to treat ourselves to one of our favorites, the pistachio cannoli!
Great Lakes Brewery
Since we're both beer enthusiasts, bike brewery tours are one of our favorite things to do on a weekend. And Great Lakes Brewery is a go-to stop each time! You can't go wrong with a Canuck Pale Ale, that one is a crowd pleaser available all year round. During pre-Covid times when the taproom was still open, the Shinny Pants Session Stout (nitrogen on tap) was one of our favorites! We tried almost every beer and we are always excited for new ones to be released. So it's no surprise we are neighborhood regulars. Not only that, but Great Lakes Brewery will always hold a special place in our hearts for letting us host our wedding at their brewery.
Adamson Barbecue
When we first saw the "Opening Soon" sign for Adamson Barbecue go up, our jaws dropped. We often crave for a good meaty Texas style barbecue but making the trek to Adamson Barbecue in Leaside, the site of their original location, seemed too out of the way. When we discovered it was opening in Mimico around the corner from Great Lakes Brewery, we were beyond excited. They just held their grand opening weekend and of course, the beef brisket and ribs did not disappoint. Highly recommended!
Cliff Lumsdon Park
While we are big fans of the Humber Bay Park near the arch bridge, it was a bit too crowded for comfort during this pandemic. Finding some outdoor space while socially distancing proved to be quite challenging this year. So to round off our top five, Cliff Lumsdon Park made our list. While technically this park falls into New Toronto as it is slightly outside the boundaries of Mimico, we feel this park is worth mentioning. Perhaps it is not as well known, but it has a great lookout spot for the Toronto skyline. It is peaceful, relaxing and the perfect place for a picnic in the park.
There you have it...
These are our top five spots we love about Mimico. Of course, the community is ever changing, so we imagine we would have more to add to the list as the community grows and becomes more vibrant. But as of now, Mimico is serene, charming and perfect for our young family. Not to mention, it offers a good balance of urban and nature, which makes it our ideal location to build our dream home.
